Abstract:The city outline and traditional central axis of Beijing during the Ming and Qing dynasties are two key points in the overall urban planning of Beijing. Through research on the status of the city outline of Beijing during the Ming and Qing dynasties, it is found that the identification of some space of imperial city, inner city, and outer city needs to be enhanced. Moreover, the overall protection of the city outline should be combined with the central axis. The city outline and the central axis share outstanding universal values, jointly building the core spatial framework of the city and reflecting the“Zhai Zhong”concept. Therefore, the overall protection of the city outline in Beijing during the Ming and Qing dynasties should be combined with the traditional central axis. A more integrated city outline can contribute to the display of the“中”shaped spatial framework of Beijing and the protection and inheritance of the value of the city outline and the central axis.
