Abstract:When building an eave corner, a craftsman of Xiangshan Clan would in advance finish both the the shuaiwang chuan (radiating lower rafters)and zhiting chuyan chuan (parallel lower rafters) instead of making adjustments after they are assembled. And the curvature of the end (mudan tou) of likou mu (pole plate) is crucial to the attachment of likou mu to nen-qiang (tilting corner beam) and the shape of its indentations for fly rafters. Thus ascertaining with accuracy the length of shuaiwang chuan and the curvature of mudan tou is highly relevant to the studies of Xiangshan Clan’s architectural legacy, whereas previous research findings mostly stopped at approximations. Drawing from the constructing patterns and ideologies of Xiangshan Clan’s craftsmen, this essay developed a series of formulas that could establish the values in question with increased accuracy.
