Abstract:Hankou town was formed last among all the three towns in Wuhan. After the diversions of Han river in middle period of Ming Dynasty, Hankou began to exist independently of Hanyang, and gathered merchants from the whole country, then gradually became one of the “four famous town” in China. Gardening in Hankou also flourished with the town's prosperity, and reached a climax in the middle and late Qing Dynasty, especially represented by private gardens, clubhouse gardens and public recreation ground. These types of gardens have their own characteristics in terms of spatial layout and landscape elements, which reflect the changes of social fashion and spatial pattern of the town at that time. The activities and functions it carried also reflected the living customs and spiritual outlook of the townspeople at that time. This article through combing historical and literature materials, case analysis, comparative research and so on, to clarify the basic situation and activities of the Hankou’s gardens, explore its space layout and design technique, and combines with the economic status, geographical environment, social composition and other factors of Hankou town in Qing Dynasty, analyze the regional characteristics of gardens under the influence of its natural environment and humanistic environment, and tries to present the landscape and the historicalchange of Hankou town’s gardens in Qing Dynasty.
