Abstract:Oyster shell is a characteristic vernacular building material in the Lingnan region. The tradition of oyster eating and rearing has a long history in the Pearl River Delta of Lingnan, and the custom of using oyster shells to build walls can be traced back to the Tang dynasty. Oyster shell houses rose with the rapid population growth in Lingnan area in the Song and Yuan dynasties, while in the Ming and Qing dynasties, the shell mining business of digging underground oyster shells was parallel with the development of Sand Farmland. Compared to the oyster houses in southern Fujian Province, Lingnan's Oyster-shell House boasts unique construction wisdom, reflecting our ancestors' respect towards subterranean marine resources.
