Abstract:Jingxing County is in the hinterland of the Taihang Mountain area at the junction of Hebei and Shanxi Province. The widely distributed and well-preserved stone-built dwellings not only reflect the unique production, living style, and technique of building dwellings in the Taihang Mountains but also are a material microcosm of the history and culture of Shanxi and Hebei. This paper first analyzes the environment of local stonebuilt dwellings in terms of natural habitat and human characteristics and classifies the dwellings into two types: stone-wood buildings and vault-stone buildings based on a structural system; secondly, it expounds on the structural system, plans layout, and fa?ade form; thirdly, it explores the composition and functional organization of the courtyard space, and summarize the characteristics of the courtyard space; finally, it explains the cultural characteristics of the stone-build dwellings in two aspects: local adaptation and cultural transmission. The purpose is to systematically interpret and summarize the characteristics of stone-built dwellings in the Taihang Mountains of Hebei, providing a reference basis for the preservation, inheritance, and revitalization of the local vernacular architecture and reshaping vernacular cultural identity
