Abstract:Ancient Chinese traditional manor gardens of the gentry is a special garden type, which is closely related to the gentry class. Through the sorting of ancient literature related to the period from the Western Han Dynasty to the Sui and Tang Dynasties, to sort out the development context of manor gardens of the gentry, which has gone through five periods of early formation period, development period, prosperity period, peak period, decline and transformation period. In the early formation stage, it emphasizes the military defense and achieves highly self-sufficient; in the development period to the peak period, it attaches great importance to production and operation of garden products, and the various functions of the garden are gradually becoming complete; in the decline and transformation stage, it focuses on entertainment, emotional sustenance, and garden production is mostly inclined to aesthetic nature.
