Abstract:It can be seen by the Chinese translation of Hegel’s Esthetics and the explanatory note of Zhu Guangqian who is the translator, that Hegel’s estimate to some Europe gardens is negative , which showed the influence of Chinese elements in 18th and 19th Century. So probably there is some?misunderstanding and covering in the judgment about the esthetics of Chinese traditional gardens. Being one of the representatives in China, family gardens in Jiangnan during the Ming and Qing Dynasty, have their own esthetic aspects, which can be combined with Hegel’s esthetics sometimes , and also can transcend it in other times. The influence in China of Hegel’s philosophy and esthetics is great, so if family gardens in Jiangnan were commented by his viewpoints, a universal way of reading Chinese gardens would be found, and a bridge of Garden Esthetics between the West and East could be built. Meanwhile, some reference principles to use design devices of traditional gardens in modern time can be raised.
